If your xenocara `make build` failed, then you really don't know what
you are testing. Possibly, you only got a portion of needed commits
when running cvs update (e.g. mirror not fully sync'd).

In my experience, yes. If you try to run the new driver with the wrong
kernel, bad things happen, consistently.

If the system seems locked up (e.g. no video output, no keyboard virtual
terminal switching, no network, etc.), you could actually be at a ddb
prompt and just not be able to see it. Try blindly typing 'boot reboot'
and wait a while. If the machine reboots, then you were at ddb prompt.
