There was networking around long before the Internet was even conceived, let alone born! Yes, technologies have indeed changed. But there is another factor which you need to be mindful of, and that is the quality and age of the wiring system.
Domesticated wiring systems are probably vastly different in Australia, given that your appliances terminate very differently to how ours do. But all the same, there are a lot of factors which I can think of which would influence whether or not trhis is a viable option. There are two types available here, one for 500MBPS and one for 100MBPS. I can see potential problems with this over long distances as described in the article David linked to in an earlier message, I'll have a talk to my supplier and see if I can arrange a trial of a few of these devices. You mentioned that the system was trialled 20 years ago? Well that being the case then I think we need to take two additional factors into consideration. Firstly a lot has changed in 20 years when it comes to technology so perhaps these Nine Adapters may have changed with the times too? Secondly I don't even remember the Internet being in existence 20 years ago and - if it was - then it must have been in its infancy, this is Australia of course but the first I ever heard of the Internet was in 1994.
