Hub should be fine for Doug. Router just has it's own Firewall. And
Routers are much more expensive than Hubs. I bought a kit, came with 2
Cards, and the Router for under $100. I have 3 Computers on it, and the
longest run is 175 feet to my shop.
There are different ways of setting it up, if you want to
Network, but I set mine up to have each computer independent of each
other. So I don't have to have a "host" computer. I suspect Doug has
gotten a bad cable (CAT-5) or has the twisted pair configuration. The
continuity checker checks continuity of the leads, and not necessarily
the wire configuration.

Doug, The HUB is the problem....
You need a DSL router like the linksys or dlink makes. Their 500-60
bucks.
You can go 100 ft from them and with a switch in the middle add another
100
ft.
I'm sold with the link sys stuff..
Go to their web site and they have some suggestions for the new to
networking crowd...

I have networked my verizon dsl with a netgear DS104 hub. From the
verizon westell2200 modem to the hub, out of the hub to my shop computer
and also over to the house for a second computer. Both extensions are
cat5 wire, only one is about 4 feet long and the other is about 75 feet
long. The short one works fine but the long one won't. Both are wired
identical. They both check perfect with the cable tester. It was
suggested that it may work if wired differently. I need some suggestions
before the wife performs a midnight castration on me!! (without consent)
