Extremely puzzling...
One thought that crosses my mind is that the metrics of the (original)
musi[cx]tex fonts are (slightly) wrong, and that corrections have been
hard-coded in the .tex files. When the metrics of the Type1 fonts are
accurate this would lead to the problems described.
But again, it's just a thought.
