With the type 1 fonts introduced you'll experience no quality difference
between the final pdf results of pdftex and dvipdfm. But that is
definitely not the case if you're sticking to the type 3 fonts. In that
case the quality of the pdf generated from the TeX dvi result is
substantially better than that of pdftex. Among the advantages of
dvipdfm is that you don't have to run the MusiXTeX several times if you
want to generate both postscript and pdf out of your source because the
dvi output is used in both cases (dvipdfm and dvips resp.). It also
seems to be more straightforward to handle 'exotic' paper formats like
landscape with dvipdfm compared the pdftex.

Would you mind explaining a little more detailed about OpusTeX: major
differences in functionality compared to MusiXTeX, from where can it be
retrieved? I don't find it along with MusiXTeX in the CTAN mirror of our
server, sunsite.dk.
