As for the problem of Acrobat Reader not displaying bitmapped ties, I am able to circumvent this problem on my system (Acrobat 5.0) by avoiding the use of dvipdfm. PDFs generated with this utility don't show ties; the same source file taken through dvips and the Convert function of GSView displays flawlessly on my machine.
Please bear in mind that the slur display problems with Acrobat Reader arise from bugs in prior versions of the type 1 musixtex fonts. Be sure to have your type 1 fonts upgraded to the most recent versions. Then try once again generating pdf scores with dvipdfm amd then check whether you're still encountering slur displaying problems with acroread 5.
