i should be looking at musixtex-T113/doc/musixtex/musixdoc.tex in the
.zip file?

what you describe is typical of a latex file with the class option
a4paper set, but it seems that the musixdoc i'm looking at isn't
suffering from that.

the other possibility is that your dvips is set to a4 but your
ghostscript is set to force everything to letter paper - what does
your postscript say the paper size is?
