I'm struggling mightily with the musixdoc that will accompany musixtex

outdated (e.g. Taupin's FTP site), or of dubious value, (e.g., discussion of
compatibility with MusicTeX). However, not wanting to get involved in a full
editing job, I'm adopting a rather laissez-faire approach. But I would like
to insert notices warning readers where they could be led astray. One such
item concerns building a format file, on which Daniel went into considerable
detail. I've never built a special format file for MusiXTeX and I seem to
get along fine. Is there now, or has there ever been any good reason for
going to the trouble of building a special format file for MusiXTeX?

I've checked MusiXTeX-ing a large piece with and and without format, and you
go from 10 seconds to 11 seconds on a 350 MHz computer. So I no longer use
a format, and say \input musixtex so that others can recompile my sources.

I've found a useful message on our list archive:

Hope this helps,
