All-- For about nine months now, Cornelius, Andre, and I have been working (on and off) to thoroughly update and edit the manual. In fact, Cornelius is still working on updating the Index. I have posted a draft at http://icking-music-archive.org/software/mxdoc109d.pdf . I would like to solicit comments and corrections on this before organizing a new release of the entire MusiXTeX package. If anyone has really extensive corrections or would just like to try compiling the document itself, I've included the source and needed auxilliary files in http://icking-music-archive.org/software/mxdoc109d.zip . (The steps to compile it are given in section 4.3).
I would also like to point out that I'm not overjoyed with the installation instructions in Chapter 3, but frankly I'm burned out from the ordeal of Chapter 2 and not inclined to rewrite Chapter 3 myself. In fact it has been suggested to eliminate Ch. 3 completely from the manual and instead include a separate readme with the distribution. I'm neutral about that; my main problem with what's there now is that the instructions for UNIX and Windows are written from completely different perspectives. I believe there should be a concise, single set of instructions going through the installation steps one by one, and pointing out the possible differences between UNIX and Windows requirements. This applies not just to installing MusiXTeX itself, but updating it, and installing Postscript fonts. What I would really like here is someone who is familiar with both UNIX and Windows to volunteer to rewrite this chapter. Then, depending on the consensus (if there is one), we can either put that in the manual in place of the current Ch. 3, or delete Ch. 3 and make the new text a readme to include in the distribution. Unless someone volunteers to do this, it's going to stay exactly as is, although I will consider removing it as is from the manual and making it a separate document, if that appears to be what people would prefer. Of course another course would be to simply delete it from the manual; there are in fact already separate HOWTO's in the archive on installation for both OS's. --Don Simons _______________________________________________ TeX-music mailing list [email protected] http://icking-music-archive.org/mailman/listinfo/tex-music
