Many Thanks, Don, it helps me a lot..

I have decided not attack Andre's other suggestion, which was to allow
xtuplets to jump staves. The reason is because of the restrictions on rests
in xtuplets. Whenever there's a staff-jumping beam, you normally have to
fill in the missing notes in BOTH voices with rests. To remove the
restrictions on rests in xtuplets would require LOTS of work.

In fact, it is only a rest at the end that causes a problem. In case of staff jumping beamed notes, it probably would be a blank rest. The xtuplets are to be allowed partionally beamed ( with [ and ] in the xtuplet). But on normal (no xtuplet) jumping beamed notes, there is also a problem: no rest is allowed at the end (you can not change the higth of a blank rest). This can be bypassed by using phantom notes.
An example of this is at Cornelius Noacks Tips and tricks section of
http://icking-music-archive.org/software/pmxtricks/tricks.html
'Staff jumping chords in PMX' bar 2 and 3

So if it is true that only the last rest can cause trouble (in fact i am not very sure about it), if the feature is allowed in xtuplets, the restrictions would be the same as in normal beams?

An other possibility could be: as in musixtex, allow the symbol '*' as phantom note in pmx ? ie 'b*' has the hight and duration of 'b', but you cannot see it.

Andre
