Looking in musixtex.tex, I see the following
commented out:
\def\centerpause{\let\adv@box\hbox \centerbar\pause}
This seems to center the rest symbol properly. Does anyone
know why this definition wasn't adopted? The "ChangeLog"
says
% 04Dec2000: Don Simons and Werner Icking made some
% improvements to volta-processing and centerbar
% processing
