Long ago, for this sort of reason, I reduced the amount of direct MusiXTeX emitted by the M-Tx processor to a bare minimum, using mostly namespaced commands starting with \mtx. I note, though that among the exceptions listed at the top of mtx.tex there is "code to achieve a multi-bar rest".
