Indeed, overfull boxes should not produce a PS error. Hairpin over a
page break could. But I would have to install GhostScript first to check
what's wrong...

If I take out all of the hairpins from psproblem.pmx, it makes a good
postscript. There are still the same overfull boxes. That suggests to me
that the overfull boxes are not the cause of the problem. Some of the
hairpins span 2 page breaks, while none do if you go to 1 page/1 system.
Maybe that's the root of the problem.

The problem seems to be in generating the dvi file. The log file for etex
says:
Overfull \vbox (11.43182pt too high) has occurred while \output is active
[2]
Memory usage before: 12976&47465; after: 631&42726; still untouched:

\output is active [3] Memory usage before: 11176&46972; after: 631&42726;
still untouched: 4937458 bar 5 bar 6 bar 7 Overfull \vbox (18.8003pt too
high)
has occurred while \output is active [4] Memory usage before: 15573&48786;
after: 631&42731; still untouched: 4933028
)
It doesn't go farther than page [4].
