AUTOMATIC TELLER MACHINE PART 2

Continuing from part 1

9. Collecting of PIN.

The earliestmethod of   collecting PIN was either tocollect from bank or it was
send separately. The card may come by post, but thePIN used to come late by 3-5
days.

10. Changing to own PIN.

The firstchange in PIN was the customer could change the PIN to his own choice.
It was a big change. Customer could keep inmind and recollect his own PIN.

Later sendingPIN got stopped. Pin had to be generated using ATM. Customer had
to keep readyhis information, his account number and keep ready his mobile.
When accountnumber and phone number are entered, system send a Pin to mobile
phone, and ithad to be entered and then changed to own PIN.

While this ismost common procedure foreign banks still give direction to create
PIN throughmobile or permit to continue old PIN while replacing existing card.
The total digitsin PIN for Indian banks are four, while it is six for foreign
banks. I stand correctedif I am wrong.

11 ATM changes

While ATMswere introduced one had to swipe the card in the slot to open the ATM
room. Ithad a lot of problems and insertion of card to slot is stopped in most
ATMcabins. While ATMs were introduced due to lack of familiarity a question
wasasked if customers took more time to operate – Do you want more time? If
answeredyes, more time was given. If answered NO, the card was pushed out. This
alsois removed in present day ATMs.

First changewas touch screeninstead of pressing keys. Still in some converted
ATMs manual keys are givenfor options, along with touch screen options. In some
both works, in some touchscreen only.

While someATMs push the cash, some keep the cash in a chest and hold keeping
the lidopen. Once you take the cash fully, lid is closed.

While swipingcard in the slot was in vogue for a long period, a very convenient
one, some ATMstook more time to read the card and caused difficulty. I
recollect security staffoften held the customers. Present day all ATMs hold the
card till thetransaction finishes.

12. Change in style of functioning.

While mostATMs had English, the language of communication while introducing,
gradually,Hindi and local language has been introduced. The introduction of
locallanguage is very convenient for those who know only local language.

>From old typeswiping card, chip card was introduced to eliminate culprit
>transactions. Nowculprit transactions are very much reduced but not
>eliminated.Recently I heard a news item in Kerala, culprit keep a thin rubber
>like item inthe slot where card is introduced and creating frauds.

While someATMs first ask the PIN first, some collect all information and
finally the PIN.99% cash might come and 1%, sorry, ATM is out of cash.

13. Recent changes in ATM

The upper limitper day for cash withdrawal is limited depends on the type of
account and typeof card. More than 9000-00 rupee transaction, a pin send to
customer’s mobilehas to be entered. The number of transaction by the card in
any ATM is limited.I think all ATMs of banks were interconnected from the
beginning, and any bankATM card can be used in other bank ATMs.

14. Five TMs, only one working, it has no cash.

There was aperiod most ATMs were going out of order. Some ATMs go out of cash.
Now thiscondition is gradually changing. Number of ATMs have increased, going
out oforder is lesser, but ATMs go out of cash has become common. This is
because ofmore transactions by ATMs. Banks display boards below a certain
amount,customers must use ATM machine.

15. CDM cum ATM

Earlier Cashdeposit machines were separate. Later ATMs incorporated cash
deposits. A chestwas provided. The customer has to enter his account number
after inserting theATM card, ATM checks the account number tally with card,
directs to enteramount, and the chest opens. Readily arranged cash is inserted,
the CDM checksfor the tally of cash deposit shown, check for the validity of
currency, andthen accept the cash. If there is reduction/ surplus, discrepancy
withcurrency, the cash is rejected and card pushed out.  Otherwise accepts and
give receipt and showbalance in display with the deposit.

Draw backwith cash deposit machine is currency below Rs 100-00 is not
accepted.Customers who use the machine for withdrawal will get depend on his
luck, either higher value or low value currencies.

Other machinesbeing busy once I used it to withdraw Rs 10000-00. I received
five 2000-00rupee currencies. Then I had to meet the bank chief cashier, to get
Rs 500-00 denomination. There is a problem like this in CDM.

16. Some new features in ATM.

One fine day, customers may observe even after entering correct pin, he may
observe wrongPIN. On contacting the bank, the managers will instruct how to get
a new pinand change and again use the ATM card.

While someATMs ask the customer to remove his ATM card, and then issue
currency. SomeATMs issue currency and ask the customer to take the ATM card.  I
think the first is more adaptable so thatcustomer will not for get to take his
ATM card.

Some ATMs irrespectiveof printing of transaction is available or not ask
whether transaction receiptis required. If you press NO, mostly, transaction
will be cancelled.

Some ATMswill ask, unable to print transaction receipt, whether like to
continue, if customerpresses no, transactions will be cancelled.

Some ATMs askwhether balance is to be displayed in screen. If pressed yes,
balance will bedisplayed.

Some ATMswill ask after completing transaction, whether the customer wanted to
makeanother transaction. Customer has to press positivelyNO, if he does not
want to make another transaction.

Ministatement of any bank can be taken from any ATM. Sometimes not possible.

More numberof transactions of the same bank may invite ATM charges, but not
very high, while ATMs were introduced.  Comparing toauto charges the additional
ATM charge is less, I agree for additional charges.

Except incertain areas ATMs functions 24 hours. Most ATMs have shutter facility
and itwill be halfway down in day time, fully down in night time.

17. Debit cards and ATM cards

Most banksissue Debit cards which can be used in ATMs and purchases etc. If the
subscriberticks only ATM, the cards cannot be used for purchases.

18. Post office ATM cards.

Post officesissue ATM cards which can be used to withdraw money from any ATMs.
They cannot be used for purchases

I hope thefacility may come soon.

19 Debit cards.

The debitcards issued by the banks may be enabled for local transactions,
ATMtransactions, but need not be for on line transactions. In that case banks
haveto be contacted for enabling online transactions.

20 Limitation of debit cards for online transaction

The cashbalance in the account is not related for the amount permitted for on
linetransaction. Hence for purchasing a computer of one Lakh, though you have
5Lakhs in account, the Debit card may permit only say 80000-00 rupees. So
onehas to take more banks’ debit card for purchasing costly items. So it is
best aperson having account in at least 3-4 banks and deposit money equally
insavings account, which could be helpful in emergent situations. Not
fixeddeposit.

21. Upper limit of ATMs.

There is anupper limit of transactions permissible depend on the type of the
card issue.Huge amount transactions can be done only through bank counter via
cheques.

 22. Some nostalgic incidents related to ATM.

Whileabolition of Rs 500-00 and 1000-00 were abolished by the previous
ModiGovernment, there was withdrawal limit from banks and ATMs. One could
seequeues for Kilometers before ATMs to withdraw just Rs 2000-00 waiting for
ATMcash loading, before hours. It was common to see hundreds of persons
waitingbefore ATM in midnight, early morning 3 AM etc. I had been in such queue
beforehours in the evening. I used to join ATM where persons were below 100.
Securitystaff used to pacify the customers, don’t be panic, all of us would get
2000-00rupees, xxx lakhs have been loaded.

There hadbeen some tele- serials of love affairs while waiting in Queue
betweenyoungsters at that time. Even now I am not able to digest the
difficultiesexperienced on those days.

23 Miscellaneous

There couldbe irritations by those waiting to draw cash when one person uses
more ATMcards to with draw money, activating cards, changing pins etc., since
thesetake more time and those waiting for quick withdrawal will be
gettingirritated.  Using quick withdrawals, issue of certain mount can be
withdrawn from ATM a little bit early.

At one timebank branches were there near, but their ATM at 10-15 KMs away.
Activating ATMcards was difficult by reaching there. Now Bank ATMs are within
reach.

Ensure ATMcards are kept safe, take print out and keep in file. Ensure signing
at backsideof ATM cards. While making online transactions, as per the present
RBIregulations, every time card number has to be entered, due to wear and
teardigits may not be legible, make sure card details are correctly kept
printed,so that it can be referred to enter card number.

I have triedto cover most of the aspects came to my mind. Still there could be
othersalient points left out. Friends can respond and I welcome it.
