DIARY Dear friends,
I asked whetherdiary for 2023 has arrived for sale about 2 days back in a nearby largestationary shop. He told me yesterday while passing through the road that,diary would be available tomorrow, after unpacking. I went today morning andabout 20 diaries were there. I selected the best one suited to me, and paid Rs.200-00, price of the diary. This posting is some nostalgic memories about diaries. Nothing very special, but some good information is there in thisposting. Gopalakrishnan4-12-2022. 1. Why purchase diary early? Earlier stationaryshops used to display “diary20xx available” in the first week of December or last week ofNovember of the year. At least 200-300 diaries would be in stock in a shop. Now persons writing diaries arereduced very much. So unless one purchase early one cannot get oneswith good quality papers, ruled, Sunday full page, full size etc. Even in firstweek of January many shops have only short size diaries. Many storevital information in computer/ lap tops or other memory devices. 2. Retired- what to write? Many havinghabit of writing diaries discontinue writing daily diary and just keep a diaryto note very important information. This diary will be continued for years. 3. Storing information in mobiles and smart phones. Many entervital information in smart phones and mobiles which is more convenient thanreferring diaries. Many keep one or two files and keep all important papers inthem. But writing vital information indiary is more helpful for reference. One such information is super password. Onemay often forget super password after internet banking is provided. Butsuddenly for some transaction, bank will ask super password. 4. Starting diary writing The idea ofkeeping diary started with me when I had to keep in memory the differentinterview date, night duty date etc. after joining Madras CTO in 1964. At thattime diary was not available and I wrote in a medium pocket book which I couldpurchase. In 1965, my late cousin living in Madras gave me a small size diaryof his company. This was the first diary I started to write. This continued fornext two years. 5. Complimenting diary. When I juniorengineer in 1967, I was complimented diaries from different companies. I usedto keep the first one for me. Often officers visiting used to take the bestquality ones from me and remaining were given to staff. 6. Junior engineer Association diary. JuniorEngineer Association started its first diary with all technical matters in1969. So we all purchased the diary from the association, which was referencebook. It started in half size and later developed to full size. 7. Department issuing association diary. In 1975, justlike that one of the General Managers came across this diary and found usefulto all junior or assistant engineers. He ordered the diary should be given toall JE officials and AE officers. From that day department itself procured thediary and supplied. The arrangement was association should give a bill ofdiaries given to us under signature. Association produced bill to circleoffice. Year by year the quality, updated information changed in the diary. Forsome old information we had to refer previous diaries. Hence all preserved thediaries. 8. State of complimenting diaries. One of thecomplimenting diaries was kept by us, remaining given to friends, relatives andstaff. Most companies gave their compliment diaries to officers. 9. When did I purchase the gold chain? My wife oftenreferred my diary for searching information relating to purchase etc. forrepair or exchange. She did not write a diary on those days, though she wasalso complimented diaries by relatives. 10. Stop of getting/purchase departmental diaries. Afterretirement in 2004, I had no more interest in purchasing association diaries.Till about 2010, I got compliment diaries from banks /LIC/builders/relativesetc. and the best one was used. 11. Purchasing diary. Complimentingdiaries gradually stopped. Most started supplying compliment calendars only. Sofor the last 12 years or more I purchase diaries in first week of December. 12. Am I using diary only? The answer isNo. Much information are stored in laptop and memory devices also. After fully acquaintingwith laptop certain information is easier to see in Laptop than from diary.However all daily information can be seen only from diary. 13. Why full size diary? On most daysmore information has to write than in half size diary. Further diaries can beneatly kept in almirah, if diaries are uniform. I keep the diaries of the lastten years in almirah and remaining in a drawer of my cot. Diaries occupy goodspace. Many other reference books, dictionaries, files, printer, additional laptop, Xerox copies taken for readyusage, emergency tool kit, emergency electrical, electronic spares etc. has to be kept in addition toservice files for ready reference. 14. Do all write diary every day? If one is notin tour most write diary on same day. Unless very tired, one write diary on thesame day. Even then, being aged, I miss some important information to write onsame day, recollect and incorporate next day or when recollect. On tour mostcarry pocket book than diary and transfer to diary. 15. Is diary writing a habit? Yes. It is ahabit for those writing, very difficult to discontinue. For them if diary ismisplaced, not able to write on the day, it can even a nightmare. There aremany wake up at midnight and enter diary information on recollecting. In themorning they may forget again the information.
