But when we say farmers, we generally mean only the farm workers or those who own small parcels of land. Their plight is to be pitied. They reportedly get anything between 15 to 20% of the market price ( some say only 10%) with the rest going to the middlemen and other intermediaries including the seller to the ultimate consumer. That is the reason why these middlemen and big mandi owners, including the big " kulaks" and the Zamindari type folks, backed by the foreign funded NGOs agitated against the Farmers Bill and got it scuttled. Otherwise their easy money and the control they exercised over the margins farmers would have gone. Since the small farmers did not have the luxury of time and resources to take to the streets, their voices were not even heard. The S C appointed Committee found more than 95%, yes, 95% of the marginal farmers supported the Farm Bill, after assurances from the Govt that the procurement Avenue by the Govt at the guaranteed prices will continue - MSP. Bit it was too late The S C had no right to interfere as it was a policy matter but a greedy S C transgressed its limits and a meek Govt caved in. The Govt also failed in effective communication as the Bill was also based on what ITC does in M P for decades - the E Choupal scheme. They could have cited it as an example and the huge benefits it brought to the small farmers. . ITC directly procures the products from the farmers, based on agreed price formula and also provides them with research based input details. That us one of the reasons why Shivraj Singh Chouhan won the madame repeatedly. We dig our own graves by ignoring the small farmers. They added that they work for that landlord also who cultivated 50 to 60 acres. They added now by that tractor for him, he will make them slaves. Then I asked them their income annually; they said that on average 20 to 30000 they may make while that one landlord earns out of their sweat in lakhs. I asked them if there were any problems with their stay etc; they said they have residences; food from the field and dress so simple. Then I added that their grievance is only that the landlord bought a tractor and grows to be well off?; they said while they live in low style ,whereas the additions make him rich and widen the Gap (may be a communist also). I asked them if there is any coop-society and do they use it?; they said they are only debtors there. Then I said suppose the 60 families form a union and each takes 10000 loan cannot the tractor be bought? I added suppose they collectively cultivate the 200 acres ,say, and sell collectively and divide them by 60 will it not be profitable? I added suppose they lend the tractor service to others ncling the landlord will it not increase their income?
