That made me seriously laugh! My wife likes your suggestion, Ravenface! :)

How about you just go to the Paperback Rack, get THIRTY books for two bucks each and throw 'em out when yer done reading 'em. Cheap! No storage! No contract! No big deal. There, I just saved you $140 bucks. Give me $70 and we're even.
Caw!

I guess part of the reason I'm considering trying the Amazon Kindle Fire is the price point. Shelling out $500 for the low-end iPad (more likely $630 or $730 for a model I'd actually want) gives me pause. Whereas shelling out $200, knowing the life on the product is more finite than iPad, doesn't give me sticker shock.
In regard to the suggestion of getting a smart phone, I'm not really interested in one. I like my phones fairly simple.

Yeah, at this point i think that all of Apple's competitors are still the JV team in terms of tablets as compared to Appl's iPad being the professional. Until 'the herd' of competitors can produce something that makes Apple even blink, my thought is, If you want a tablet, go with the iPad!!

My iPad is wifi only but it hasn't been a hindrance. Everyone has wifi available, and it takes minutes to sync all your content- I've had a full novel come over via the kindle app in about 20 seconds at home.
I've read that the web browsing experience on the kindle is awful. No idea if that expends to the fire. My significant other wants the kindle touch; the color isn't as important as the longer battery life of the traditional version (and she isn't interested in the apps).
