The AppleTV unit worked fine at Best Buy. They have 36 months-no interest, so I went ahead and bought a new TV. It arrives Monday.
Prices have come dramatically down. In 2006 I bought a Samsung 40" LCD for $1400 (was $1700 at Best Buy). This time I got a 55" for $749. Crazy. The solution I had hoped to avoid, but... It's like $20 a month, so no huge deal.
