I agree with Millar that the Justice League movie is a bad idea, but his quote
was terrible. He's coming at it from the wrong direction, and everything he
said about the DC characters is true of the Marvel characters. They're all over
fifty years old. My parents know the Hulk and Captain America, etc. It's not
like Marvel did something amazing with new or unknown properties. They had
history and a patient careful approach to building up to the Avengers.

Really interested to see how that Guardians of the Galaxy thing does. That
will be the true test. There's zero recognition there. Will the good will built
up by the other movies boost it? If that one takes off, they'll be unstoppable.

Those Marvel movies all had a similar tone and a thread that connected them
all. If they make a JLA movie now, they will have to spend two hours
introducing everyone before... having them fight.... a CGI Starro? Generic
aliens? Lex Luthor's robots? Boooring.

The DC movies are a wild mish-mash of debatable and disparate quality, and the
most popular character had the actor who played him die...

Green Lantern was maaaybe an attempt to start this off, but: it was poorly
handled and, most importantly, was very clearly not in the same universe as the
Batman movies. They have a lot of work to do before they cram this movie down
our throats. It's too big to make without prepping the audience.

Caw!

Cary, the joke was not that Deadpool was a hard boiled character. The joke is
that you say "Deadpool" to most people on the street, and if that name means
anything to them, it's as the 5th Dirty Harry Movie, The Dead Pool.

That's where his name came from in fact.

No Joe Bloggs on the street is going to know who Marvel's Deadpool is.

And Serv is right when it comes to the money, so no, I don't blme Fox for
rolling the dice with the X-Men. Of the three properties which Millar was
bragging about, that is the only proven one. The ONLY one.

with regard to the X-Men movies, i hear what you are saying about film quality
Luke, but that doesn't stop the X-Men films from always being juggernauts.

Each film in the series (Including Wolverine) have grossed over $140 Million,
with the least grossing film being....X-Men First Class surprisingly. Now, i
will concede that the gross for the X films has been decreasing since Last
Stand, but the franchise has still grossed just under a BILLION dollars. If
film grosses over 140Mil each time out is a dice roll, Fox will roll the dice
every day.

Dunno if I agree on Deadpool. Im not a current fan, but the character always
struck me as more over the top comedic than a gritty Dirty Harry archetype. If
publicized properly it could easily be successful, but I think that Marvel has
Ant Man flagged for that role already.

Furthermore, considering that their stable of properties is not exactly flush
with top draws -- The FF have had two films and yet to have a true blockbuster,
the X-Men series has been hit or miss with regards to quality, and who,
exactly, besides comics nerds gives a rat's ass about Deadpool? -- it's kind of
laughable to hear him deride DC characters.

The FF will never be a huge hit on the screen because Joe and Jane Filmgoer see
that trailer and say "Oh, it's like The Incredibles. I already have that one
on DVD."

The X-Men, it's a roll of the dice every time a film is released. Will it be
X2, or will it be Wolverine?

And Deadpool. Ahh, Deadpool. Deadpool fans like to boast about how important
and popular their guy is. You release a solo Deadpool movie, and 2 things
happen:

1. A tiny fraction of a percentage point of filmgoers goes crazy on the
Internet about a Deadpool movie.

2. A substantially larger percentage of filmgoers will cock their heads to the
side and say "They're remaking that Dirty Harry movie? Huh. I already have
the original one on DVD."

I know I am shocked that a guy who works for Fox overseeing Marvel moies is

Shocked.

Whether his assesment is valid or not is irrelevant because he has no interest
in being objective. He personally benefits greatly if a Justice League movie
is never released. If a JL movie does come out, that is that many more tickets
which will not be bought for the films he is the guru over.
