My son wants a laptop for daily use at college, though he has a desktop pc - more textbooks are pdf's, and wifi on the campus, etc.
There's a "You pay what we pay" promotion with Lenovo, maybe I can swing it. This is a Dad pay item. Wifi, 14" since they are all widescreen now, trackpoint, XP (either theirs or mine - if drivers are available) Which series do I opt for? A decently spec'd Inspiron is $900, and that seems high for a midrange unit with a one year warranty - doesn't it? I use a couple older pre-Lenovo Thinkpads, and a Vaio, but don't say anything about the Vaio - it's a work thing.
