Get him either a netbook or a tablet. Cheap, since it is likely to be
stolen. He doesn't need much power, since he has a desktop for games etc.
You should be able to find a Thinkpad X41 tablet refurbished for under $400.
(I am looking at an ad for one as I type.)
I don't let students use laptops in the classes I teach unless they are
tablets. This is a fairly common policy.

My son wants a laptop for daily use at college, though he has a desktop
pc - more textbooks are pdf's, and wifi on the campus, etc.

Wifi, 14" since they are all widescreen now, trackpoint, XP (either theirs

Which series do I opt for?
A decently spec'd Inspiron is $900, and that seems high for a midrange
unit with a one year warranty - doesn't it?
I use a couple older pre-Lenovo Thinkpads, and a Vaio, but don't say
anything about the Vaio - it's a work thing.
