I don't know if it's the same thing, but a friend has a work machine
with some sort of USB hardware authentication. Trouble is it times out
or gets lost or something every couple of hours, so they're constantly
unplugging and replugging the dongle.

Killing the USB ports, it is. So now they're going to get (what I
assume is) a short USB extension cable which they'll leave plugged in
all the time, and kill _its_ connector by using it all day.
