A smart card is credit-card sized with a chip inside and a set of contacts
on one side for the reader. I used to use one that authenticated my VPN
access (along with a PIN). (Warning - drift: Special USB dongles have now
replaced the smart card in many places for authentication and/or VPN
access.

Disregard, after some more updates and a reboot, there is now a different

I read a review where they stated that the T61 LCD was dim. Now I wonder if
there was an issue with the settings, as this thing (14" WXGA+) is BRIGHT, in
fact so much so that now that I cured the issue I may set it back to 10 or
11.
It is a bit of a PITA to get XP up and running on the T61, but so far it runs
great. This is the 2 GHZ T7300 with the nVidia 128mb card. Seems quick and no
issues so far, one gig of RAM, that might have been an issue with Win 7.
But just to start a controversy, it is looking more and more (to me) that M$
got it right with XP SP2 (not too much experience with SP3 as most of the
customers want SP2 for software reasons) and 7 could be as big of a bomb as
Vista. I mean, I just don't see the point, XP is proven, solid and stable and
does all kinds of neat tricks. As usual, its about the money.
BTW, this unit has a smart card reader. What the heck is a smart card? Do I
have any of them? is that like a Metro Card (for the subway)? What a waste,
must have been a corporate purchase and they wanted to read ID badges or
something.
But my overall impression is that the T61 is built about equal to the T60,
and so far they have been very good for my customers. In fact, I don't recall
one warranty issue with a T60 that I set up.

Subject: [Thinkpad] T61 XP question for anyone
I just got my first T61 (at least, the first used one that I needed to
configure).
It had Windows 7 on it, which was TERRIBLE (don't get me started) but it
was not a Lenovo recovery install, so that probably has something to do
with it.
Anyway, I installed IBM XP from T60 recovery CD's. All went well, then I
did the update connector and got all the right T61 stuff onto it.
But I do have one issue I have not been able to resolve - when I make a
power sceme, and put everything on MAX, I can only set the screen
brightness to 10
BUT, it appears, from other messages, that there should be 15 levels of
brightness. If I turn it all the way up then click on my sceme, it dims
down (back to 10 I guess).
I did the newest power driver, BIOS etc. I don't even see a battery
maximizer software in the T61 matrix, but it appears to be running the T60
version properly, at least as to everything else.
Anyone have any ideas?
