Not quite sure of your disclaimers, but given that you 'picked' up this
'gem' maybe you can pick-up the following in your 'neighborhood':

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/IBM-Thinkpad-600X-500Mhz-Laptop-Spares-Rebuild-2_W0QQi
temZ230432576207QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_Computing_Laptops_EH?hash=item35a6da12
cf

i.e. a TP 600x on UK ebay for < 30 quid.

Now this, with it potential 544 meg of Ram, and CPU 'boost' when compared to
the 600 does indeed have the oompf to run XP (I have had one running this
way). Expect some 'issues' (difficulty) getting some 256 meg PC 100 memory
that 'works' (will be 'detected') but if you are 'willing' there's a way.

Good Luck.

Andre'

Subject: [Thinkpad] ThinkPad 600

Hi
I just wanted to start by saying hi. I am an experienced computer user of
Windows, Mac and Linux and have been for over 17 years. I have always been a
fan of IBM ThinkPads and owned a few a couple of years ago - a 760 and a
380ED.
I wanted to pick your tech brains. I picked up a quite old ThinkPad 600. It
is a lovely little machine in mint condition, but it is lacking in the spec
department for every day use. A mere Pentium 2 300Mhz with only 160MB RAM.
It does have a DVD drive and a massive 60GB hard drive.
I originally had it running Windows 2000 and it screamed along. But
temptation got the better of me and I installed XP Home and performance
isn't great.
I know chucking some more RAM in it would help XP, but this thing tops at
288MB RAM (2x128MB and an on board 32MB), so wonder if that is enough RAM to
keep XP happy.
What do you think. I loved Windows 2000, in its day, but is it too old these
days. I have only found one piece of software I use under XP that isn't
supported under 2000 and that is the Google Chrome browser, so I am
wondering whether it is worth reinstalling Windows 2000, just to get that
extra bit of power out of the machine.
What do you think?
