I have numerous customers using 600 and 600E machines because they need to
use a program that requires DOS, and can not run at over 400 MHZ. Many of
them use these machines online with wifi and/or Verizon Broadband adaptors
and Win98se, and as long as they run anti-spyware software they have no
problems. I don't even install anti-virus on these, because Norton is a cure
that's worse than the disease and AVG won't run.
The only virus I have seen on them in years is boot sector, which they get
by leaving infected floppys in the drive at boot up. So I just set all the
machines only to boot from the hard drive, problem solved.

In the year 2010, one shouldn't seriously advise anyone to go back to an
operating system that does not support pre-emptive multitasking. In
antique operating systems like Windows 95 or 98, rogue processes
invariably appear after some hours or days of operation and cause the
processor to run at 100% capacity, often without the ability to shut the
offending processes down. Ever since obtaining an early copy of Windows
2000 at the ITU Telecom convention in Geneva in 1999, I have never looked
back.
Windows 2000 runs very well on most early Thinkpads, usually better than
Windows 98, despite a slightly higher demand on RAM. Both Windows 2000 and
Windows XP can be optimized for older machines with the LitePC software
that selectively disables unwanted OS components. Lastly, I can highly
recommend looking into the operating system Windows Fundamentals for
Legacy PCs, which is a thin client OS based on Windows XP. I have
successfully installed and used it on a ThinkPad 570E and experienced very
good performance.

That machine is an ace with 98SE, anything above that is just too slow.
