It can be a while out of warranty on a business computer... we have done it many times, but it has to be less than a year out of warranty, and sometimes you have to be persuasive...It is not possible to do it late on a home Thinkpad as we have tried that using business warranty Thinkpads as a model.
The nice thing is that Lenovo remains as flexible as IBM Thinkpads used to be... but it is always sort of a crap shoot... and sometimes you have to call back to get another "agent" do don't push too hard at first...
