You'd be surprised at what a ThinkPad warranty covers. Many of us extend them when we wouldn't think of paying for an extended warranty on anything else.

Presumably you downgraded to the 1 year warranty from the default 3 years when you bought it; that was not a good way to save money. If you can re-up the warranty for $150 as Ted suggests, I would do so.
