Are you sure that this provides an option to disable the Trackpoint for a
600E? Simon, if you don't see an option to disable the Trackpoint here, then
you can also disable it via the "Thinkpad Configuration" options screen,
which provides access to a variety of BIOS-level enabling/disabling from
within Windows. Where to find the Thinkpad Configuration options depends on
which version you are running, but generally it will be in the Access IBM or
Thinkvantage folder in your Start Menu.

Once you disable it via the Thinkpad Configuration menu, then I think it
will remain disabled in other operating systems as well, because this is
actually a BIOS-level disable, not simply marking it as disabled in the
Windows device manager. In fact, on a 600E, you can actually use a special
DOS program to do this -- in conjunction with a DOS boot disk. I'm not sure
if there is a way to access this feature directly via Linux after the OS has
loaded.

Lastly, there is a BIOS CMOS hack that you can do that will override
everything and force the trackpoint to be undetected by your hardware before
it gets through the BIOS-level boot operations. This CMOS hack is really
only necessary if you have a faulty Trackpoint that is throwing up an error
when you try to boot and the error is preventing you from even booting up.
But here is a link to an explanation of it nevertheless:
