I think that may be a result of the Trackpoint setting in the Thinkpad
Configuration options. On a 600 series machine, you have the option of
Disable, Enable, or "Auto-Disable".

Here is a copy of the Help text from the Thiinkpad Configuration help on my
600X:

-----Beginning of selected help text-----

"TrackPoint - This option is for enabling or disabling the TrackPoint on the
ThinkPad keyboard.

Select Enable (some models only) when you are using the TrackPoint only, or
when you are using a standard PS/2 mouse attached externally to the PS/2
port.

Select Disable when you do not want to use the TrackPoint, but instead use
an externally attached mouse on the serial port or a device that is not
compatible with the PS/2 mouse such as a scrolling mouse.

Select Automatic (some models only) when you want to use the built-in
TrackPoint, but then automatically disable TrackPoint when an external mouse
is attached.

Select Auto-Disable (some models only) when you want to use the built-in
TrackPoint, but then automatically disable TrackPoint when an external mouse
is attached (the Auto-Disable only occurs at power-on or reboot, so the
external mouse is not "hot attachable").

-----End of selected help text-----
