Hi James,
Bonjour Dominique, how are things in SF?
Thanks for asking, fine! I hope it's the same for you.
I sincerely doubt you can get a free update from Lenovo for your machine.
Better to just spring for the small amount asked for 7 recovery CDs at
http://www.thinkpadrecoverycds.com/windows7.html
Actually, I had asked the same question on the forum at thinkpads.com
and I got pointers to legally downloadable copies of Win7:

After all, I do have a valid OEM serial number for Win 7 Pro, and my
understanding is it's good for both the 32 and the 64 bit version.
Thanks for the recovery CD link, but I had planned to do this during the
long week-end (Monday is a holiday in Finland), so I'd rather try the
downloadable method first. I'm downloading the three files from the
Digital River site as we speak.
I'll let you know how the Windows 7 DVD works on a new install rather than
as an upgrade. I borrowed the set my buddy bought and I'm going to try them
on a clean install in my X61 tablet on a spare 320GB HD I've got.
OK, thanks! I think I'll also perform the install from scratch on my
X301, since I haven't really had the opportunity to install anything
else than the factory Win 7. I did enroll my finger prints, but I
believe they will survive the new install.
Cheers, Dominique
