Needs a new fan

I have an IBM ThinkPad T42.
When I press the power on button, I get two beeps,
and the words "Fan Error" on the screen. After
about 30 seconds, the system powers itself off.
I have tried it with and without the AC power; both
ways fail the same way.
I blew air into the opening on the left hand side
of the case. That did not help any.
I assume I need to take the unit apart and clean
the fan. Anything easier to try first?
