The card I used (using some Prism2 chipset, IIRC) indeed needed an
updated firmware, but that firmware can easily be updated (either by
uploading it to the card's RAM each time you boot, or even by updating
it in the card's flash).
I have Intel software installed for Wi-Fi so I expect it is an Intel chipset
which rules out WPA support then.
