No, the chipset is not the culprit.

I've tested Intel and Atheros cards in X30 with no issues regarding higher 
levels of encryption. 2200BG will work just fine in there.

I have Intel software installed for Wi-Fi so I expect it is an Intel chipset 
which rules out WPA support then.
