Agree on that Monoprice adapter - I can't recommend it for the same reason.

I use a cheap passive adapter I got from Central Computers last year for my
W510. Instead of being a single solid piece, it has a short 2-3" cable
connecting the two plugs. This seems like a much better way to go if you
don't get the full DisplayPort-to-DVI cable. It looks a bit like (but not
identical to) this one:

You can definitely get a sharper picture with the DisplayPort/DVI than VGA.
