Thanks, James answered some of my questions that I just replied to
Robert -- ie, I should expect 64bit Win7 to run fine on an X61s (apart
from any misbehaving legacy apps). And, I gather, you can put in a
pair of 4GB sticks.

If I were to get a new drive, and install 32bit Vista, I could then
upgrade that to 64bit Win7? Is there some way to install the 64bit
Win7 without first having to install Vista?
