I doubt that. I did tell them my product key, the confirmed it was for an upgrade, and had me download a small program that activated Windows 7 for me.

I'd imagine that they checked the product key to see how many times it had been used for activation.

I had a really hard time with that. While it seemed to perform flawlessly,
activation failed. I called Microsoft and had to download some software that
would force it to activate. It's been fine since.
