Joe, where do you live (which country)?. Chances are that, by now, you may well have the ability to send Hotmail directly via a free Hotmail SMTP server and not need the Webmail extension to send your mail.
I too find that my free Hotmail accounts get an error on sending mail (my WebDav enabled Hotmail account has not had any problems of any kind with the Webmail extensons in so long I cannot remember).
