This can be avoided today.

The solution is *not* to use the option provided in the Hotmail add-on
that is for "download unread emails only"

This option really contravenes the POP3 protocol (though - as I always
say - I understand why the Webmail Author provides it).

To use it without problems you need to do some preliminary work
(avoiding this work is one of the reasons it is provided).

You will need to go to the Hotmail Website and move any large number
of messages you have in the Inbox to a new custom folder. The same
wouls be true for any large custom folders that you have downloaded by
the extension.

The reason for this is that de-selecting the "download only unread
messages" in the Hotmail add-on will cause a re-download of all of the
messages in the Inbox and selected folders from the Hotmail server.

However, once you have done this work and de-selected the "download
only unread messages" Thunderbird will work as it is designed, in
accord with the POP3 protocol, and you will not experience the re-
download of your Hotmail messages again.
