I would recommend you to download Morris Grays version: 
http://twtudu.tiddlyspot.com/
Then you could rename the three different layers in the GTD section
(including tabGoals, tabProjects, tabTasks and the
newtiddlerdefinitions as well)
This way you would get a new hieracy of things.
It will give you some nicely arranged lists with sliders for each
listitem with submenus.
Goals could be redifined to: "the broad problem area"
Projects could be "sub-headings within that broader
topic" (topic:Goal)
Tasks could be "tasks" or what ever - that again could use the
statuses, that you define yourself...
The sliders for goals, projects and tabs can be redefined to reflect
what you need..

You can "testdrive" the possibilities just using it as it is -
modifications can be done later - maybe it's just small adjustments
and you don't have to change the goals, projects and tasks system
fundamentally...
