Now, I do not understand any of this, but can explain if that helps, that 
the computer I am using is a Lenovo Thinkpad T400 with an inbuild wifi, I 
could not get to work. I am using a usb wifi adaptor, that works right out 
the box with the kernel drivers.

I will try your suggestion on the other computer in a short while,
