Messing with the mask will bring the virus closer. Most masks can not block the tiny virus particles and most people don't wear them properly, allowing air to go around the edges.
Perhaps masks are helpful in cultures where people need an excuse to avoid physical contact (e.g. kissing as a form of greeting). I'm thinking of wearing gloves as a reminder to not touch the face.
