After I posted my most recent follow-up (included below) I was looking
through tiddlers whose names include 'stylesheet' and found this:
.whenBackstage {display:none;}
.backstageVisible .whenBackstage {display:block;}
Not knowing any better, I wonder if it relates in some way to why my
backstage stubbornly stays hidden on the other connection I use at the
office ??
