Thanks for your help Tobias.
I have just discovered something. I have (at least) two different versions 
of TiddlySaver.jar
The older one (which came with 2.7.1) is 4.8 kb & the newer one (came with 
2.8.1) 11.8 kb. If I  use the older one with 2.8.1 the backups are created, 
but with the newer larger jar they do not.
I guess newer is not always better?
