The parser runs are part of render prep process. 

I think the parsers are very useful--and currently wildly underused for 
customisation--mainly, probably, because they are in JS.

I particularly like his: http://flexibility.tiddlyspot.com/ which is a pure 
regular expressions based pre-parser that runs before the main parsers kick 
in. Its a bit fiddly to set-up but very good if what you need do is all 
regex based.
