They are back now. indeed it probably needed some time to settle down. I'd also vote for keeping the editing around, since I like keeping notifications in my email for convenience, but I end up always checking the replies in the web version anyway. Old habits from those forums which say "a new post has been made, you will receive no further notifications until you visit ###" , also helpful in this case because of possible editing.
