Can we please reconsider these? I'm working on removing the
filetransfer support, and the diff is becoming huge, needlessly so,
because Adam has a different version of autotools than I have. This is
just useless noise in the history that makes tracking the real changes
very difficult.

Not to mention when you try to do any kind of vendor drop from this
project. If you have local changes in your copy, suddenly the shit
really hits the fan as it is no longer a small diff in Makefile.am or
configure.in that needs to be merged.

Autotools is a perfectly reasonable requirement if you build directly
from svn. So let's make sure autotools from older distributions are
sufficient and remove all of this generated cruft!
