I concur.  To add further fuel to this discussion, I was able to upgrade
my CentOS 5 system to autoconf 2.61, but it still fails because the
version of m4 is apparently also incompatible.

/usr/bin/m4: unrecognized option `--debugfile=autom4te.cache/traces.0t'
Try `/usr/bin/m4 --help' for more information.
autom4te: /usr/bin/m4 failed with exit status: 1
aclocal: autom4te failed with exit status: 1

This is exactly why I hate autoconf/automake and will not use them in my
own projects.
