Guys, what is the matter with you? The original input from Nelson was something like "Hey, what about sharing IPs of some clients we know to act abusive with other pool members?" and you go on about FTEs, state of the art technology, evil crackers lurking behind every corner, trying to burn down every single pin of our CPUs in order to dominate the world by bringing down pool.ntp.org and how you are aware of all that stuff because you built up the entire AOL infrastructure from scratch with your right hand while making a perfect copy of Da Vinci's Mona Lisa with your left one blablabla. Don't get me wrong, I have nothing but respect for all your technical expertise and when reading the list I sometimes can't help but being somewhat grateful (as corny as it sounds) to gain insights into your experiences and knowledge (both of which I most likely will never ever have myself) but the direction this discussion took.. The last few posts are not a bit over the top, they are close to overkill. Let's just focus on the real issue here: sharing some IPs (and I suspect Nelson was talking about maybe up to 10 clients showing the most abusive behaviour over a rather long period of time) between pool servers. Totally optional which will lead to maybe 50 servers sharing 1000 IPs. I'm not an expert on anything but sitting around in my underwear and watching dump TV shows but that can't be a problem of epic dimensions maybe it could have even been accomplished in the time you were going ooooon and ooooooooooooon about all the stuff you went ooooon and ooooooooooooon about ;-) So I propose everybody cuts down his answers to "Well, from my logs I can't see how blocking abusive clients would really help us. They are annoying but no threat of any kind." or "That's a good idea. Regarding realization I would use bla to gather the data, exchange it with bla and implement the blocking via bla.". No offense to any of you. As I said I deeply respect the expertise of all of you and I am happy that you are concerned and care about stuff only very few of even the geeks are aware of but let's not make mountains out of molehills, alright? Best regards, Niels. _______________________________________________ timekeepers mailing list [email protected] https://fortytwo.ch/mailman/cgi-bin/listinfo/timekeepers
