That sounds like a reasonable explanation.

months ago I started a statistic about distinct IPs I see. Some about
thirty thousand new IPs a day after day. There are no signs of any

Thanks very much for that link. It inspired me to start a similar statistic for my ntp pool server. The data collection has begun. Now it's just a waiting game until there is enough to be useful.

I never realized what a huge turnover in clients there was for each day. The average number of active clients stays relatively stable, but now it's clear to me that very few of those actually stick around for the long term. I should have realized it all along, but finally the light bulb came on for me.
