Yes, it does have automatic ack, but look at the errata and you will see that it does not work in certain cases, and besides it will have the same problem as the cc2420 stack that is you will ack packets that you cannot deliver to the appliaction. So it is better to use software ack, and in fact you can do that (read the message verify the crc since there is no auto crc check, check the unique identifier then generate the ack) in less than 200 microseconds between the RX finish interrupt and the next SFD field! It is very quick and provably reliable.
